Penny Boden Artist & Art Educator
helping aspiring artists gain skills & confidence, both in person & online

Bio & CV

Penny was born in Victoria, and grew up in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. She spent most of her formative years in Honeymoon Bay by the wooded shores of Cowichan Lake. Penny’s mother ensured that her 4 children grew up with organic gardening, healthy, natural living, and a deep level of respect for the natural environment. The whole family was quite involved with March Meadows, a 9-hole golf course, where Penny's father served as Golf Pro.

Penny’s artistic endeavors were continually encouraged by her parents. Her grandfather, Frank Ernest Whale, was a multimedia artist. He died when Penny was just 5, but his paintings and sculptures served as encouragement and inspiration. Penny enjoyed sculpting in clay during visits with her grandmother in Victoria. Her grandparents’ store, Whale’s Arts and Ceramics, was an important part of the family until her grandmother sold the business and retired.

Penny was happiest when drawing with a graphite pencil. She enjoyed the simplicity and immediacy of the medium. With encouragement from parents and art teachers, she did dabble in other media. When given a choice, Penny always migrated back to drawing.

As a young mother, Penny left her homeland and moved to the North Peace Region of BC. The joys and challenges of raising a son and two daughters left little time for anything else. Penny's art fell by the wayside for a few years. As the children got older, the artist in Penny resurfaced.

Penny recently moved back to the Cowichan Valley and now lives in Duncan. Her forte is drawing, which goes hand in hand with her printmaking. She does practice painting and sculpting as well. Her inspiration comes predominantly from her life-long love of nature.

Penny is especially passionate about mentoring aspiring artists. As a certified teacher and a former special needs teacher, Penny strongly believes in the healing power of art. She has watched it positively transform the lives of both children and adults. Penny's unique teaching style guides students in recognizing and using intuition to develop art skills. This is a powerful method. It greatly increases confidence and allows students full ownership of their skills. Penny offers mentoring and workshops in drawing, printmaking, painting and sculpting. Her online art school, Drawing for Success, is in its infant stage. With plenty of new courses in the plans it will continue to grow.

Penny is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and local artist groups. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections around the world.
